The part nobody sells you

There is a step in RV monitoring that almost nobody writes about, because it is not a sensor and nobody makes a satisfying product page out of it. A sensor tells the hub. The hub has to tell you. That second part is the whole thing, and it is the part that quietly does not work.

You can spend four hundred dollars on sensors, install every one of them perfectly, and get exactly nothing while the rig is in a storage lot in February. Not because anything failed. Because there is no internet in a storage lot in February.

Two different jobs that get called the same thing

Worth separating, because the answers are completely different and people buy the wrong one constantly.

Sensor to hub is Bluetooth, it is short range, and it is solved. Your sensors broadcast, the hub is thirty-odd feet away through a wall or two, and none of it touches the internet. This works in a storage lot, in a canyon, on a ferry. It costs nothing and needs nothing.

Hub to you is the internet, and it is not solved by anything in the rig. This is the one that decides whether “alerts your phone” means anything.

Nothing is lost while you are offline. The hub keeps recording, timestamped, the whole time. When it finds a network again it hands over the entire history. So the question is never whether you will find out. It is whether you find out in time to do anything, which is the question that matters.

Four situations, in descending order of how well this works

Parked at home

Solved and free. The rig is in range of the house wifi, or close enough that a cheap outdoor access point on the side of the garage covers the driveway. If your RV lives at home between trips, this is the whole answer and you can stop reading.

Worth checking rather than assuming. An aluminium-sided trailer is a good approximation of a Faraday cage, and the bar of signal you get standing beside it is not the signal available inside it.

At a campground

Campground wifi is famously bad, but bad wifi is fine here. We are sending a few hundred bytes when a reading changes, not streaming anything. A connection too slow to load a web page is comfortably enough.

The real problem with campground wifi is not speed, it is the captive portal: the page that makes you accept terms before anything works. A hub cannot click a button. Anything on a network like that needs a router that handles the portal once and holds the session.

Travelling

This is where a travel router earns its money, and where most people already have one for other reasons. It takes a SIM or tethers to your phone and presents one stable network name inside the rig, so everything on board keeps working while what is behind it changes from campground wifi to cellular to a different campground.

The stable-name part matters more than it sounds. Without it, every change of location is a device that needs reconfiguring, and the one you forget is the one that goes quiet.

Storage, which is the one that matters

Here is the awkward part, stated plainly: this is the situation where monitoring is worth the most and the one where it currently works least well.

Winter storage is exactly when you want to know that the wet bay is at minus two, or that a bay door is open, or that the battery has been sliding for three weeks. It is also a fenced lot with no power and no wifi.

There are three honest answers and none of them is free.

  • A cellular router with a cheap data plan, powered from the battery. Works, costs a few dollars a month, and adds a load to a battery that is already the thing you are worried about.
  • Storage with power. Costs more per month and solves this and several other problems at once, including keeping the battery charged.
  • Accept the gap. The hub records everything and you get the full history when you visit. For a lot of people this is genuinely the right call, and it is worth making as a decision rather than discovering it in March.

Cellular built into the hub would remove this decision, and it is planned rather than shipped. Anyone telling you today that a Bluetooth monitoring system watches your rig in storage is either selling a cellular device or not thinking about it.

What to look for in a travel router

We do not read routers, so this is advice rather than compatibility. Four things actually matter:

  • It handles captive portals. The single most common reason a campground connection does not stick.
  • It runs on 12 V. A router that needs an inverter to run needs the inverter left on, which is a much bigger power draw than the router.
  • It can fail over. Campground wifi when it is there, cellular when it is not, without you doing anything.
  • Low idle draw. For storage this is the only number that matters. A few watts continuously is a real fraction of a battery over a winter.

Do not solve this with your phone as a permanent answer

Tethering works and is the right answer while you are in the rig. It stops being an answer the moment you walk away, which is precisely when monitoring is for.

This catches people out in a specific and annoying way: everything works perfectly during setup, because you are standing there with your phone. You leave for the day, and the system goes silent at the exact moment you started wanting it.

The short version

Sensors are the easy half. Work out how the hub reaches the internet before you buy sensors, because the answer changes what the sensors are worth to you.

At home, you already have it. Travelling, a travel router. In storage, decide deliberately between a cellular router, paying for powered storage, or accepting that you get the history rather than the alert. All three are reasonable. Not deciding is the one that goes wrong.
