Why there are links to other people’s products at all

RoamVitals reads dozens of Bluetooth sensors we did not build and have no plans to build. A propane sensor from Mopeka, a thermometer from Govee, a shunt from Victron: these are good products, and telling you to buy one is often better advice than telling you to wait for us to make our own.

Where a retailer or manufacturer runs an affiliate program, we use it. That way, work that would otherwise be unpaid research pays for itself, and we can afford to keep the compatibility database accurate rather than letting it rot.

What that means in practice

• Your price is the same. The commission comes out of the merchant’s margin, not your wallet. Buying through our link costs you nothing extra.
• Every commissioned link is labelled where it appears. Not just on this page, and not just in the footer. If a button earns us money, it says so next to the button.
• Buttons name the merchant. You will see “Buy on Amazon”, never a bare “Buy Now” that hides where it goes.
• Your purchase is with them, not us. Their returns, their warranty, their support. We are not a party to it.

What commission does not buy

This is the part that matters, so it is worth being specific.

Our compatibility database is generated from the decoding rules the platform actually ships. A device is listed as supported because the hub decodes it, and as a candidate because it does not. That status is produced by a build step from the catalog itself. There is no field anywhere in that pipeline that a commission rate could touch, and nobody can promote a device by paying us.

Concretely: several devices on this site are marked as detected but not decoded, and carry no buy button at all. Some of those are popular products we could sell a lot of. They stay unsold until we can honestly say they work.

We also do not accept payment for a review, for a placement in a guide, or for a position in a table. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page in question, in the same size type as everything else.

What we record when you click

Outbound product links pass through our own site so we can count them. We record which product, which page you were on, the time, a one-way hash of your IP, and a bot flag. We do not record who you are, and we cannot: there is nothing in that record that identifies you.

We count clicks because it tells us which pages are worth the effort of maintaining. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
